Candidate Andy Ellis available all day for media on the Green Party nominating process— and on the Democratic and Republican primaries
BALTIMORE — Maryland does not run a primary for the Green Party. Under state law, the taxpayer-funded primary elections are reserved for the two "principal" parties, so the Green Party will conduct its own party-run nominating process July 8th-22nd to select its candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor.
"The primaries are a taxpayer-subsidized party-building tool for the Democrats and Republicans," said Andy Ellis, who is seeking the Green Party's nomination for Governor. "In Maryland's two-tier system of parties, non-principal parties like the Green Party have to run their own nomination process. This is one of the many things a Green multiparty approach to democracy would change."
Media availability: Andy Ellis is available all day on Tuesday June 23rd to discuss the Green Party nominating process, as well as the Democratic and Republican primaries and what they mean for the general election.
"Obviously the Democratic and Republican primaries are important in determining the nature of the race in the general election," Ellis said. "At the same time, we know that no matter who is elected, more and more Marylanders are losing trust in the two parties and their politicians, and we look forward to offering a vision this fall that puts voters first."
