Taylor Frazier McCollum Joins Ellis/Andrews Campaign as Data Center Organizer

Landover community organizer who fought the data center in her hometown will organize communities across Maryland.

Andy Ellis and Owen Silverman Andrews, the Green Party nominees for Governor and Lt. Governor of Maryland, today announced that Taylor Frazier McCollum has joined the campaign as an organizer focused on data centers. McCollum comes to the campaign from the No Landover Data Center movement, where she launched the petition to stop a proposed data center in her hometown in Prince George's County.

"I have worked with Taylor in the fight to stop the data centers and I am thrilled she is joining our campaign to do this work," said Ellis. "Data centers are the perfect issue for the Green Party right now because their rapid buildout shows the corruption of the two party system and how much we need a politics rooted in a Green Party vision: Peace, Justice, Democracy, and Ecological Wisdom."

The data center fight is central to the campaign. Ellis has called for a ban on new data centers, clawbacks of any tax breaks that have already been given out, and strict state level regulations on any existing data centers. Ellis has travelled across the state and worked with organizers to stand with communities fighting projects in Frederick, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's, Calvert, Charles, Baltimore County, and Baltimore City. In June, primary voters across Maryland removed pro-data-center incumbents from office. McCollum will organize with communities across the state resisting the buildout.

"I have faith in democracy, but not as it currently stands, that’s why I have been a Green Party member for over a decade," said McCollum. "When deciding on my next project, I knew I wanted to keep fighting for the world we all deserve.  That's why I'm joining the Andy Ellis for Governor campaign and pushing democracy to new heights!"

McCollum was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Landover, where her organizing started early: she volunteered for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation as a kid and became president of the District Heights Youth Empowerment Program at 15. In college she canvassed for Barack Obama in Florida, and after graduation she joined the Green Party and worked with DC NORML on responsible cannabis policy following legalization in the District. When a data center was proposed in Landover, she launched the Change.org petition to stop it and became a leading voice in the movement against it. A devoted mother, she plans to keep advocating at the local level and to one day run for office herself.
