Baltimore, MD — The Ellis campaign condemns the Supreme Court’s ruling in US v. Skrmetti, a decision that undermines the rights of transgender youth and LGBTQ communities across the nation.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s dissent rings alarmingly true:
“By retreating from meaningful judicial review exactly where it matters most, the Court abandons transgender children and their families to political whims.”
This ruling gives states the power to ban gender-affirming care for trans youth—and potentially broader discrimination—by signaling that the Court will not protect transgender individuals or communities from attack. We are witnessing a Supreme Court influenced by corporate donors and powerful interests, a Court that dismantled Roe v. Wade and now enables unchecked corporate and wealthy influence in shaping public policy.
In light of this, the Ellis campaign emphasizes the urgent need to turn away from reliance on a compromised judiciary, and instead strengthen protections at the state and local level. We draw inspiration from the Green Party platform:
“The Green Party recognizes the full civil rights of sexual and gender minorities… We will work to add sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression to the existing civil rights act.”
“The Green Party affirms the right of all persons to self‑determination with regard to gender identity and sex… We support the right of individuals to be free from coercion and involuntary assignment of gender or sex.”
The Ellis campaign is mobilizing supporters, community groups, and state legislators to:
Draft and enact state-level civil rights laws that explicitly include sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.
Build a regional sanctuary network to provide safe refuge and legal protection for LGBTQ individuals facing state-based persecution.
Organize community-led self-defense and mutual aid efforts, ensuring collective care and protection for those most vulnerable.
“The Supreme Court has failed to safeguard basic human rights. Now, the power to protect our most vulnerable must come from the ground up—from informed state policies, resilient communities, and shared solidarity,” said Andy Ellis.
“We invite advocates, organizations, and lawmakers to join us in crafting bold, state-based policies that defend trans youth and the entire LGBTQ community—because true justice cannot wait for a Court that has abandoned its duty.”
