Baltimore, MD — In response to Governor Wes Moore's recent vetoes, including legislation to establish a commission to study reparations, the Andy Ellis for Governor campaign expresses deep concern over the disconnect between Governor Moore’s rhetoric and his actions.
“Governor Moore claims we need action, not studies—but all we've seen so far is talk,” Ellis said. ”While we acknowledge and share the Governor's stated desire to move beyond studies to tangible action, we have yet to see initiatives that match the urgency of the problems and depth of his promises. If he's serious, let him step off the national TV circuit and debate real solutions right here in Maryland. The clock is ticking on reparations, climate justice, data centers and energy security, and Maryland deserves leadership, not excuses.”
The vetoed reparations bill, supported by a veto-proof majority in the legislature, aimed to address Maryland's legacy of slavery and systemic racism through comprehensive study and recommendations.
Moreover, the Governor's vetoes extend beyond the reparations bill. Legislation aimed at studying the impacts of climate change, the burgeoning data center industry, and Maryland's energy challenges were also dismissed. These actions suggest a pattern of sidelining critical issues that require immediate and sustained attention.
We urge Governor Moore to present clear, actionable plans addressing:
Reparations and reckoning with Maryland's historical injustices
The immediate threats posed by climate change
Regulation and oversight of the data center industry
Comprehensive solutions to Maryland's energy infrastructure and sustainability
It's imperative that these discussions and decisions occur transparently and involve the communities most affected.
The Ellis campaign has already developed a position on reparations (https://www.gogreen2026.com/reparations) and will be releasing comprehensive plans for each of these topics this summer. Ellis stated: “We look forward to a robust policy debate about each of these topics. The time for rhetoric has passed. Maryland demands concrete plans and meaningful action.”
The Ellis campaign has several events coming up where voters can learn more:
Online information session for candidates considering running for office with the Green Party this Wednesday May 21st.
In-person community meeting in Gaithersburg on Saturday May 24th.
The Maryland Green Party’s 25th Annual Assembly on June 14th at the Busch library in Annapolis.
